Motivational Interviewing I

Motivational Interviewing I explores the experience levels the guiding principles, strategies and skills for incorporating motivational interviewing (MI) techniques into their practice.  Essentially, MI is a form of collaborative conversation for strengthening a client’s motivation and commitment to change.  

MI consists of a set of empirically validated counseling techniques designed to support client-centered work for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change by paying particular attention to the language of change.  MI helps build rapport with clients, engages them in treatment and/or intervention, explores ambivalence, motivates clients towards behavior change and supports efforts to reduce risk behaviors by acknowledging and enhancing their natural capacities and assets within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. The workshop covers an individual approach designed to create opportunities for clients to move forward with positive change in their lives. 

At the conclusion of training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of effective intervention;
  • Be familiar with the origin and background of MI;
  • Identify and demonstrate the fundamental MI skills.
  • Recall different acronyms that relate to MI skills.
  • Learn how to use direct and indirect messages accurately
  • Appreciate how the MI model fits together
  • Avoid mistakes, the traps, and conflicts that may result from misinterpreting others or ineffective listening
  • Perform skills and strategies, identify areas of strength and competency
  • Challenge and development

Motivational Interviewing II

Provides the content and confidence needed using Motivational Interviewing for successfully interviewing.  Includes  review of Motivational Interviewing I.

At the conclusion of training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Repeat core motivational interviewing concepts and discuss associated practice experiences
  • Explain how to use focusing to prioritize the person’s goal for the interaction
  • Recognize language that favors staying the same versus making a change
  • Discuss and practice strategies to evoke and reinforce language in favor of change when working with people who have severe mental illness and/or a substance use disorder
  • Identify techniques for strengthening commitment to and planning for change
  • Identify and practice strategies to elicit and reinforce change talk
  • Identify and practice techniques for strengthening commitment to and planning for change.
